Kevin Patrick Johns, M.D.

Kevin Patrick Johns, M.D., 48, of Brookings, died July 6, 2005, at his home of natural causes.

He was born May 7, 1957 in Chicago Heights, IL to Lawrence Jason and Nancy Ann Divall Johns.

Raised and schooled in Chicago Heights, Dr. Johns graduated from West High School in 1975. He worked for a time at the YMCA before serving a full-time mission for the Church of Latter Day Saints in the Salt Lake City, Utah Mission.

He married Julia Lynne Mason on August 8 1980 in Salt Lake City. After attending medical school in Ann Arbor, Michigan and his residency at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, Oregon Health Services University in Portland, Dr. Johns moved to Brookings to work at the urgent care clinic.

From 1991 to 2003 he was the physician at Pelican Bay State Prison in Crescent City, CA.

His desire to serve others was further met when he was called to serve on the High Council of the Coos Bay Stake of the LDS Church. He later served as bishop of the Brookings Ward until 2003.

Dr. Johns enjoyed woodworking, reading and music and was a student of choral music. He was honored by his Native American heritage, and he will be remembered for his teachings, kindness, wisdom, and courage, friends and family said.

He is survived by his wife Julia Johns of Brookings; son Patrick Thomas Johns of Provo, Utah; daughter Lauren Nicole Johns, also of Provo; sons Mason Alexander Johns and Mackenzie Taylor Johns both of Brookings; parents Lawrence and Nancy Johns of Rockford, IL; brother Lawrence Allan Johns of Madison, WI; sister and brother-in-law Kelli Ann and Jeffrey Paul Clark of Billings, Montana; and brother and sister-in-law Jason and Shauna Johns of McKinney, Texas.

Funeral services will be at the Church of Latter Day Saints meetinghouse in Brookings at 11:00 am on Saturday, July 9. Burial will follow in Utah at Orem Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday July 13. Memorial contributions in Dr. Johns' honor are suggested to the Johns family in care of any branch of US Bank.
